As the academic session comes to a close students who availed education loans to support their studies come under increasing pressure to pay off their liabilities. There are many students who are unable to pay off the loans instantly.
As a result unfortunately most of them make it to defaulters list.
In case of default in paying up the
student’s loan the maturity date of each promissory note is accelerated. This means that the students
are required to clear of the debts with immediate effect. In such cases, the students are no longer
eligible for any type of deferment or forbearances. Continued failure to repay the loan in default may
result in several negative consequences such as garnishing the wages, withholding the federal income
tax and losing the eligibility for other loans like FHA or VA.
There are several methods to repay a default loan, which have been designed to assist students in such situations.
There are also certain programs that can even remove the name of student from the defaulted status. The appropriate repayment option is determined on the basis of the
objectives of the students.
Payment In Monthly Installments
There are provisions made available by all the leading guarantee agencies and the U.S. Department of Education that accepts regular monthly payments from students. These installments are both reasonable to the agency and affordable to the students. - They repay or close the loan liability in full or
- Make arrangements to consolidate the loan by way of FFEL loan consolidation program or the William D.
Ford Direct Loan Program or
- Undertake to rehabilitate the loan through the loan rehabilitation program
The eligibility to get a FHA or VA loan can only be possible if the students meet any or all of the above criteria.
Improvement Of The Credit Report
Credit worthiness of the students can be critically damaged if they fail to repay the defaulted loan. In fact, consumer-reporting agencies may continue to report an account for 7 years from the opening date, but there are several ways to restore the credit worthiness partially and in some cases to the fullest extent. The options that help to improve one's credit worthiness can be
- To repay the loan in full or
- To consolidate the loan through the FFEL loan consolidate program or the William D. Ford Direct
Loan Program or
- To rehabilitate the loan through the loan rehabilitation program
If the students want to write off all the negative report related to credit worthiness they need to
fulfill the conditions of the loan rehabilitation program.
